Curtain Walls

Curtain walls are designed mainly to stand firm and protect the building or the structure from the air and water penetration, also from the wind forces acting on the building and from its own dead load forces. The first curtain walls were made of the steel, but nowadays curtain walls are made up of aluminum. The aluminum frame of the wall is filled inside with the glass. This makes it architecturally beautiful and also gives the benefit of day lighting. The other inside fillings in the aluminum frame can be stone veneer, metal panels, louvers and openable windows and vents.

Curtain walls must be designed in such a manner that it provides envelop for the building from water and air penetrating in the building. Curtain walls require maintenance to maximize its service life. Curtain walls are good for life safety. Blast damper system makes the curtain wall safer. The glass frames and deep mullion system are too stiff but then they fail to resist the bomb blast. One has to introduce a high tension into the cables to prevent against the deflection so that the customer gets architecturally amazing front wall. Curtain walls are not only for the resident building purpose but also used in military projects, courthouses, airports and convention centers.
